“Workshop and interdisciplinary competition to imagine the future energy landscape of the Saclay plateau”.
Imagining the Plateau de Saclay's energy landscape in the light of the energy transition.
This was the challenge proposed by the ENSP Landscape and Energy Chair, Centrale Supélec, ENSA Versailles, the Saclay Design Center, and the Diagonale Paris-Saclay to students from various courses. From February 27 to March 2, 2018, young architects, landscape architects, engineers and designers were invited to imagine spatial responses as part of the competition “Imagining the energy landscape of the future of the Saclay plateau”. Multi-disciplinary teams of 5 students each were formed to propose a desirable, future giving a glimpse, of these transitions.
The responses gave rise to a view combining art and technology, inspired by the international Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) competition, whose two directors, Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry, were the guests of honor. Each teams' work visualized the energy transition on the Saclay landscape, calling for the design of renewable energy infrastructures in keeping with the resources of the Plateau site, not forgetting the sobriety and efficiency of energy use in future lifestyles.
Housed in Centrale Supélec's new premises at Gif-sur-Yvette, the students worked in a research environment at the cutting edge for renewable energies, artistic experimentation and their conceptualization in landscape and transition architectural projects. Throughout the week, they were accompanied by experts from various disciplines, from France and the United States, to fuel their productions.
