Project for an educational nursery of native tree and shrub seedlings at the Makoré and Etimoé school, Abidjan, Ivory Coast
With French researcher and botanist Annette Hladik, we are proposing an educational project that would involve students, their parents and school staff to build a small nursery to grow multi-purpose trees on their own land in connection with reforestation effort in the Ivory Coast, particularly in the Taï National Park near San Pedro.
"The Ivory Coast has relied heavily on cash crops such as cocoa and coffee. In coffee and cocoa plantations, useful trees are disappearing, even though they provide significant food products and/or income supplements. One example is the domestication of the Makoré (Tieghemella heckelii, sapotaceae), a wild fruit tree of great importance in the western part of the Ivory Coast".
The seedlings and cuttings would then be used to progressively plant trees the school site, for teaching purposes on biodiversity and developing awareness on traditional knowledge, while protecting pupils from the sun during lunch breaks and recreation periods on site.
