"Reinventing the residential fabric of Saint Martin-de-Crau", Pays d’Arles

"Reinventing residential fabric in Saint Martin-de-Crau" wagers on the implementation for the collective renovation and transition process of one or more residential areas and their transformation into a landscape project and ecological transition area. The Pôle d'Équilibre Territorial et Rural du Pays d'Arles and La Fabrique Terrestre Aquatique et Aérienne discussed the need to take greater account of landscape integration issues for new renewable energy production sites. As a result, we have formalized a proposal to be made for the Commune of Saint Martin-de-Crau as a possible project LEADER.

Our team proposed to invite the residents of Saint Martin-de-Crau to create two "emblematic green spaces", based on the idea of collective construction and a graphic intervention. The first invitation to work is a sculpture based on recycling professional waste in rural areas from commercial activity zones and logistic hubs and would be located very close to the Mas de Laurent Ecopôle. The second invitation to work is a garden earthwork based on the energy recovery of low-temperature geothermal resources. The aim is to heat the Saint-Martin-de-Crau swimming pool, located near the Roubine de la Chapelette.

At the same time, our team has proposed a study of the evolution of veteran single-family housing, which seems ill-suited to today's aspirations. The challenge is to attract new household typologies to the neighborhoods of Saint Martin. To reap the benefits of energy renovation on a block level, consideration is needed to invest time in support for residents. The aim is to provide specific support for pooling initiatives, to promote this type of renovation, and to help initiators define the scope of the project.

The pooling of renovation work is feasible on the scale of a group of owners wishing to improve the energy performance of their properties. Pooling has no impact on property organization and imposes no constraints on the future management of renovated properties. It provides an opportunity to define the scope of action and to assert technical and financial dynamism in complex situations. The approach pursued will seek to anticipate the issues raised by each phase of the LEADER project at both regional territory and local levels.

The project calls for a team with four skills: an energy and environmental engineer, an architect/researcher/teacher specializing in energy and environmental issues and their modeling, an expert in design strategy and consultant to business leaders, a sociologist and a landscape architect specializing in the energy transition of territories through landscape integration.
