"Enclosures for healing": urban acupuncture in Seoul

Urban acupuncture; introducing enclosures for sensory experiences in the city

Acupuncture relieves stress in the body. Urban acupuncture relieves stress in the environment. By juxtaposing urban environmentalist design theory with traditional (Korean) medical acupuncture theory, cities are seen as living, breathing organisms with specific areas in need of repair.

Sustainable, community-oriented projects serve as "needles" that revitalize the city by healing specific parts, similar to the meridians of the human body.

Enclosures for healing

A basic element was proposed - a 5 meter by 5 meter space called an "enclosure". In this space, two boulders (approx. 1.5 to 2 meters long) and 2 smaller ones (approx. 0.7 meters long) will be installed.

All the stones will be made from natural stone, with extraordinary shapes reminiscent of natural environments. The larger boulders will be accessible via the smaller stones. The shapes of the stones are based on Suseok art, which uses stones of different scales according to traditional significance.

Both boulders and stones will have two levels of bump structures on their upper surfaces, forming a matrix grid. One of these levels will be structured with bumps that follow the "meridian point pattern" and the twelve meridians attached to eight additional vessels" according to traditional Korean medicine. The second level will be generally lower.

The enclosure will have a plant component made up of medicinal species and flowering plants that will move inside and around the stones.

Materials; inducing harmony between the plant, the body and the mineral

Boulders and stones will be made of natural stone, either fine-grained granite or sandstone. Bump structures will stimulate both body and feet, then target organs and muscles where fatigue accumulates.

Creating memories from balancing experiences

The enclosure will allow relaxation through contact between stones and bare flesh, stimulating blood circulation, restoring immune function and enhancing natural healing from within. This experience will be enhanced by scents, flavors, textures and aromas with natural sensations of rustling leaves, wind, light and air, weaving a web of sensations.
